Anglian Water surface water drainage charge.

If your water provider is Anglian Water then it is highly likely you are eligible for a £30 rebate.  The charge in question is should arguably never be charged in the first place and most water authorities stopped it years ago.  Anglian Water decided they'd continue though.  As far as I know OFWAT forced them to offer the rebate form which is why it is tucked away on their website.  By the way, I applied for this two years ago and received my rebate, no questions asked.  After the first year there is no need to reapply.

Gas and Electricity

Before Christmas 2003, TXU Energi was taken over by Powergen who immediately hiked their prices.  In January 2004 British Gas announced a price increase due to wholesale price increases, despite failing to pass on previous wholesale price reductions on several prior occasions.  The point of these two examples is that it is likely you are paying over the odds for your gas and electricity.  There is really no reason to do this as switching provider is extremely easy.  I've just moved both my gas and electricity to Scottish Power and will be saving about £120 per year.  How did I know what was best for me?  I used an online service called U-switch, the link to which is below.

U-Switch (affiliate link) - this site is easy to use and allows you to switch online. You will need to know your gas and electricity suppliers, your approximate expenditure on both and your bank sortcode and account details so they car arrange your monthly direct debit. Please note, if you click the link above I should receive three bottles of wine as part of their "recommend a friend" service. This doesn't affect your application at all but if you don't want me to get any wine then use this link instead!

Energy Watch UK - this official watchdog site basically says what I say above, that switching is easy and you should do it if you will save money.

Phone and Broadband Internet

Most of the people in the area that I know use NTL for their land line phone and broadband Internet.  They are cheaper than BT and offer quite a few packages.  The broadband service is generally OK too.  Be warned, the NTL support number can take ages to get through to a human though!
